Purification of Ethyl Acetate
Now to purify ethyl acetate, many matters must be observed.
The preparation of ethyl acetate is often mixed with other things. To obtain its pure product, a delicate method is required. At the beginning, after the reaction is completed, the product may contain unreacted acids, alcohols, and impurities such as generated water.
First, it is treated with a saturated sodium carbonate solution. This liquid can remove acid, because it can react with acid, convert acid into salt, and salt is easily soluble in water, layered with ethyl acetate, easy to separate. It can also reduce the solubility of ethyl acetate in water, making it easier to separate.
Then the method of liquid separation. Put the mixture in the separation funnel and wait for a while until it is clearly layered. The lower layer is the aqueous phase, containing salts such as impurities; the upper layer is ethyl acetate, carefully separated to obtain a crude product.
However, the crude product may still contain trace amounts of water. Then it is treated with a desiccant such as anhydrous calcium chloride to remove the moisture. Anhydrous calcium chloride can be combined with water to achieve the purpose of drying.
Finally, the method of distillation is used. Because ethyl acetate has a specific boiling point, the temperature is controlled near its boiling point to vaporize it, and then condensed and collected to obtain a pure ethyl acetate.
The purification process requires fine operation and micro-knowledge to obtain high-purity ethyl acetate to prepare for all needs.
