Method of making aluminum acetate
To make aluminum acetate, all kinds of materials and utensils need to be prepared. The materials include aluminum compounds, such as aluminum hydroxide, or metallic aluminum, and acetic acid is indispensable. The utensils need a clean reaction vessel, such as a flask, and a stirring rod, a heating device, etc.
If aluminum hydroxide and acetic acid are used as the starting materials, an appropriate amount of aluminum hydroxide should be placed in the flask and slowly injected into the acetic acid. In this process, it is necessary to continuously stir to make full contact between the two. Due to the reaction or heat generation, if the reaction is excessive, the speed of acetic acid injection can be slowed down slightly. When the reaction between the two is smooth, it can be moderately heated by a heating device as appropriate to promote a more complete reaction. However, when heating, the temperature should not be too high to prevent excessive volatilization of acetic acid.
If aluminum metal is reacted with acetic acid, there is often an oxide layer on the surface of aluminum metal, so it needs to be removed by an appropriate method, such as a little treatment with dilute acid, and then washed. Put the treated aluminum metal into the reaction vessel and add acetic acid. This reaction starts slowly or can be heated slightly to start. During the reaction, stirring is also required to make the reaction uniform. The reaction of aluminum metal with acetic acid will produce hydrogen gas, so the reaction environment needs to be well ventilated to prevent hydrogen accumulation.
When the reaction is over, the resulting mixture or contains unreacted raw materials, impurities, etc. It can be removed by filtration. If you want to obtain pure aluminum acetate solid, the filtrate can be evaporated and concentrated. When evaporating, one should pay attention to the heat until crystals precipitate, stop heating, and use residual heat to dry the water to obtain aluminum acetate. Throughout the preparation process, the operation needs to be fine and safety should be paid attention to, so that the required aluminum acetate can be obtained.
