If a base is used as a catalyst, the acetyl group of the hydroxide in the base, the acetyl group of ethyl acetate, promotes the separation of ethoxy groups, and quickly produces acetate and ethanol. This change is one-way, because acetic acid and alkali react to form salts and do not reverse.
